Iran holds a day of prayer for the funeral of its supreme leader Ali Khamenei
The second day of funerals for the Iranian ayatollah forced the closure of the Mosala mosque, where a crowd of faithful gathered
This Sunday, Iran held the funeral prayer for the assassinated supreme leader Ali Khamenei, which was attended by tens of thousands of people, including senior officials of the country, on the second day of the public funeral in which calls for revenge against the United States and Israel resounded.
Since the early hours of the morning, a large crowd with Iranian flags and portraits of Khamenei gathered at the great Mosala Mosque in Tehran to say goodbye to the man who led the country's reins for more than 36 years and who was assassinated on the first day of the war with Israel and the United States on February 28.
Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, one of the country's leading Shiite religious authorities, led the funeral prayer for Khamenei and the four members of his family killed in the attacks, prompting attendees to shout "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."
The president of the country, Masud Pezeshkian, also attended the prayer; the president of Parliament, Mohamad Baqer Qalibaf, and the head of the Judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei, among other authorities, as well as three sons of the late Iranian supreme leader, Mostafa, Masud and Meisam, which made the absence of his second son and successor as supreme leader, Mojtaba, more notable.
Given the massive attendance of the faithful, Iranian media reported that the main hall of the mosque was closed to the public.
Seven days of funerals
The funeral ceremonies for Khamenei's death began on Friday (07/03/2026) with an official tribute ceremony in which senior officials from the country and foreign authorities and delegations participated.
Yesterday the first day of public funerals was held, which will last in Mosala until 8:00 p.m. local time today and tomorrow, Monday, the funeral procession will tour the streets of the Iranian capital and then be transferred to the city of Qom on Tuesday.
Wakes are planned in Iraq on Wednesday and Khamenei will finally be buried on Thursday (07/09/2026) in the holy city of Mashad, in the northeast of the country, in the mausoleum of Imam Reza, the eighth imam of Shiism.
