What if yes? Mexican Isaac del Toro makes history, wins second stage of the Tour de France and sends support to Tri
The Mexican cyclist conquered stage 2 of the Tour de France in his debut, achieved the first victory for Mexico in 37 years and dedicated a message to the Tricolor
Mexican Isaac del Toro confirmed that his emergence into world cycling is no coincidence. In his first participation in the Tour de France, the UAE Team Emirates rider won the second stage after launching a definitive attack on the last climb to Montjuic, winning ahead of his teammate Tadej Pogacar.
The 23-year-old crossed the finish line accompanied by the Slovenian, who raised his arms alongside the Mexican to celebrate a victory that is already part of the most important moments in national cycling.
The first Mexican victory in the Tour de France in 37 years
Isaac del Toro's victory meant the first victory of a Mexican cyclist in a stage of the Tour de France since that achieved by Raúl Alcalá 37 years ago, an achievement that confirms the growth of the Baja Californian among the elite of the international peloton.
At the end of the stage, Del Toro did not hide his excitement about the result.
"This means everything to me, I am privileged to be on this team, which has trusted me from the first moment. This is the fruit of the work of the entire team, I can't believe it, it's crazy," said the Mexican.
Isaac del Toro's message for the Mexican team
In the midst of the celebration, Isaac del Toro also had time to think about the Mexico team, which hours later would play its round of 16 match at the 2026 World Cup against England.
"We have eleven players who have to advance to the quarterfinals tonight. Being at the same level as the national team in the most important race in the world is a dream," commented the Mexican runner.
Furthermore, he thanked Tadej Pogacar for his support, who allowed him to fully enjoy the victory.
"You don't know what it means for me and for my country. It's something incredible," he added.
This is how the general classification of the Tour de France remained
Despite Isaac del Toro's stage victory, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey as leader of the Tour de France.
Tadej Pogacar rose to second place in the general classification, while Remco Evenepoel occupies third position. Thanks to his performance in Montjuic, Del Toro climbed to fourth place, just 16 seconds off the lead, establishing himself as one of the great revelations of the race.
