The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the Taylor Farms lettuce sample, which had tested positive for cyclospora, was considered a false positive. This conclusion is based on the complexity of parasite detection.

“Due to the complexity in the detection of Cyclospora, FDA laboratory experts re-reviewed the sample results and concluded that the finding does not represent true amplification and should be considered a false positive,” the FDA said in a statement replicated by CBS News.

Despite the false positive, Taylor Farms had voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. The decision was made as a precautionary measure, following possible links to an outbreak of cyclosporiasis.

The FDA identified a specific farm, which represents less than 1% of the US iceberg lettuce supply, as a possible source of the outbreak. The company committed to collaborating with public health authorities.

Impact of the outbreak

The cyclosporiasis outbreak has affected more than 1,600 people in 34 states, although state health departments report numbers exceeding 5,000 cases in some places.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that lettuce supplied to Taco Bell restaurants (in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia) was one of the sources linked to the outbreak. Walmart also recalled related salad products as a precaution.

Cyclosporiasis, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, can cause symptoms such as persistent watery diarrhea. Although no deaths have been reported, outbreaks of this disease tend to occur in spring and summer.
