Ivan Zamorano compares Club America with Real Madrid
Ivan Zamorano acknowledged that during his time in Liga MX he witnessed the impact of Club America, comparable perhaps to Real Madrid
With the authority conferred by having played for Real Madrid and then Club America, Chilean Ivan Zamorano stated in an interview for the podcast 'El Cafelito' that the Eagles are the only team capable of matching the impact of the powerful Real Madrid.
With only four In Liga tournaments MX at the beginning of the new century, the Chilean striker emphasized that perhaps abroad, or in Europe, the true significance of Club America isn't fully understood, and only a player who wears its colors can truly grasp it.
“America is truly impressive, how big it is, the greatness it possesses! Outside of Mexico, people don't know about it, and we only learned about it because I had friends at the club who told me, 'Come to this club, it's a big club,'” explained the Andean striker who achieved success with both teams, in addition to stints at Inter Milan and Sevilla.
During the conversation, host Joseph Pedrerol asked: “Like Real Madrid in Mexico?”
It was then that Zamorano continued his explanation: “The tour we did when I arrived with America in the United States, we played three friendly matches in stadiums with a capacity of 80,000 or 90,000, and we filled them all, every single one! Mexico." (…)
Zamorano also added: "At first I had doubts, but I wasn't wrong! I chose perfectly! At Club America, I was happy. To this day, when I go to Mexico it seems like I never left, so they were two spectacular years where I had a great time."
The context
Ivan Zamorano had the privilege of being crowned champion with Real Madrid, where he won a League title, a Copa del Rey and to Spanish Super Cup, where individually he won the Pichichi for the best goalscorer of the 1994-95 season. Seven years later, he arrived in America, where he reaffirmed his goal-scoring prowess, helping the team break a three-year drought and finally win the title in the 2002 Verano season. Even without their World Cup players,the Eagles defeated Necaxa in the grand final. It was during this time that the player known as Bam Bam was able to gauge the universal significance of Real Madrid and the impact America generates locally and, on occasion, internationally, although its impact on the media and its fans is a different story altogether.
