Mamdani admits to feeling proud to advise immigrants how to avoid being detained by ICE
Zohran Mamdani, New York's mayor-elect, does not regret advising immigrants on how to resist ICE raids and reiterates that he will protect them
Zohran Mamdani, New York's mayor-elect, admits to feeling proud to advise undocumented immigrants on how to avoid being detained during Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids (ICE).
Last Sunday, the Ugandan-born politician shared a video on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, inviting immigrants to learn about their rights to avoid being detained for deportation purposes.
“ICE cannot enter private spaces like your home, school, or a private area of ??your workplace without a warrant signed by a judge. If ICE doesn't have one, you have the right to say, 'I do not consent to their entry.' You have the right to keep the door closed.
Sometimes ICE will show you similar documents and claim to have the right to arrest you. That is false. Legally, ICE is allowed to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent,” he stated.
The Muslim politician's initiative caused deep discomfort to Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, who anticipated an investigation against him.
“We are certainly investigating all of this in coordination with the Department of Justice. Mamdani may be violating the Constitution by giving advice on how “evading law enforcement and how to get away with breaking the law,” he said during an interview with Fox News. However, this doesn't seem to bother the mayor-elect, as in an interview with MS NOW, he stated that he is proud to support undocumented immigrants living in the United States. “I am proud to inform people about their rights, and I can't think of anything more American than talking about the protections we all have under the law,” he emphasized. During his campaign,The 34-year-old politician pledged to defend the estimated 3 million immigrants living in New York, which immediately drew the ire of President Donald Trump, who considers it an affront not to support his proposal for the largest deportation in history.
