A 55-year-old man was arrested in Greece for having hidden his father's lifeless body for two and a half years in the industrial freezer of his hotel in the town of Mistras, on the Peloponnese peninsula, in order to continue collecting his pension, the Skai radio station reported.
The investigation began after local residents notified the police that it had been a long time since they had seen the detainee's nonagenarian father, who was known to suffer from dementia, in public.
After verifying that there was no record of the man as deceased, the agents contacted his son, who stated that his father was in Athens.
However, his sister, who lived in the Greek capital, denied what her brother said and revealed to the authorities that she had not seen her father for years, nor spoken to him.
After this, the Police summoned the 55-year-old man to the police station and the agents, accompanied by a judicial investigation officer and a forensic doctor, went to his hotel, also declared as his place of residence, where they found his father's body in an industrial freezer in the basement.
The detainee confessed to having hidden the death of his father (at age 90) to collect his pension and that of his mother, who had died earlier, and whose father was the beneficiary, Skai reported.
So far no obvious signs of injuries have been found on the body of the deceased, although it is necessary to complete the thawing process in order to perform the autopsy and determine the cause of death, according to the same source.
The detainee is accused of false testimony, fraud against the State and violation of the weapons law, after a compressed air pistol was found in the hotel.
According to the local news portal notospress, the man had turned the abandoned two-story hotel into a fortress and prohibited anyone from entering or approaching it, even electrical or other service technicians, and had installed surveillance cameras throughout the area.
