Texas will once again become a key point for the United States technology industry. SpaceX and Tesla confirmed that they will build Terafab in Grimes County, a complex that will concentrate the production of next-generation semiconductors for artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous driving and even space infrastructure projects.

The first stage of development contemplates an investment of more than $16.8 billion dollars and the creation of at least 3,000 direct jobs. Additionally, the Texas government will support the initiative with a $30 million incentive delivered through the Texas Enterprise Fund, as reported by Governor Greg Abbott.

A factory designed to accelerate technological development

Terafab will bring together processes that are normally carried out in different plants in one place. The manufacturing, packaging and testing of advanced chips will share the same industrial complex, which will reduce development times and accelerate the arrival of new generations of processors.

The project will occupy more than 100 million square feet, equivalent to nearly 9.3 million square meters, a dimension that reflects the magnitude of the commitment of both companies.

Elon Musk explained the scope of the plan with a statement that summarizes the project's ambition: “We are undertaking the most epic chip manufacturing effort, combining logic, memory and advanced packaging under one roof.”

The businessman also pointed out that Terafab will allow the production of large-scale artificial intelligence processors that can be used “on Earth and in space.”

Chips for robots, autonomous vehicles and space

A significant part of the production will be destined for the Optimus humanoid robots and the Cybercab autonomous vehicles developed by Tesla. Both require processors capable of analyzing enormous volumes of information in real time to operate without human intervention.

For its part, SpaceX plans to use high-performance chips in future space data centers, an initiative with which it seeks to take advantage of the advantages of the space environment to expand artificial intelligence processing capacity.

As part of that strategy, Tesla has already launched the construction of a research plant within the Giga Texas campus. This center will be used to test new technologies before transferring them to Terafab.

Response to growing demand for semiconductors

SpaceX and Tesla believe that the demand for processing capacity necessary for their projects will far exceed the available global supply in the coming years. Although they will continue to work with their usual suppliers, both companies believe that developing their own factory will be essential to guarantee the supply of chips.

Governor Greg Abbott stated that Terafab will accelerate semiconductor production in Texas “on an unprecedented scale” and will reinforce economic growth in the southeast of the state, consolidating the region as one of the main technological hubs in the United States.
