Search for college student missing for almost a week in Vermont
Lia Smith, 21, was last seen Friday night at a campus building; authorities are using drones and asking for community help
Authorities in Vermont are maintaining an active search for Lia Smith, a 21-year-old Middlebury College student who has not been seen for almost a week.
Smith, a California native and a senior at the institution, was reported missing on Sunday, according to the Middlebury Police Department. She was last seen Friday around 9 p.m. at one of the college campus buildings.
Police use drones, expand search areas
The Middlebury Police Department said the search includes the use of drones to explore areas on and around campus.
“Investigators are working to identify additional potential search areas,” the statement issued Monday said.
Middlebury College Public Safety is also participating in the effort, along with local law enforcement. Authorities are in constant contact with the young woman's family and friends to reconstruct her last movements.
“We will do everything possible to find her”
In a letter to the student community, Middlebury College expressed its deep concern over Smith's disappearance.
“We will do everything possible to find Lia. She is a beloved member of our Middlebury family and there is nothing more important than the health, safety and well-being of our students and our entire community,” college authorities stated.
The institution reported that it has activated psychological support and counseling services for students affected by the news.
Description and call for public collaboration
According to the police description, Lia Smith is approximately 1.80 meters tall, weighs about 72 kilos, and has brown hair and blue eyes.
