The bullet train that will connect Las Vegas with Los Angeles would begin to operate in 2028
Brightline West will connect this pair of cities in less than 3 hours
What until recently seemed like a futuristic vision to connect two of the main cities in the southern United States, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, today this initiative has begun to be visualized more clearly and accurately through the Brightline West high-speed rail project.
According to AP, this initiative is a fully electric bullet train that will cut travel time between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles metropolitan area in half, with a goal of starting operations in 2028. The project, which had been under discussion and delayed for years, finally began construction in April 2024, marking a historic advance in transportation in the United States.
A fast and sustainable journey
According to official plans, the train will travel approximately 350 kilometers in an estimated time of two hours, directly connecting Las Vegas with Rancho Cucamonga, in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
From there, passengers will be able to easily connect with the metro network and other public transportation systems towards the city center. With this, it is hoped to offer a faster, safer, and more sustainable alternative to road travel, which typically takes more than four hours under normal traffic conditions.
According to AP News, the Brightline West will reach speeds of up to 200 miles per hour (320 km/h), becoming the first high-speed rail system to operate in the country. Its design seeks to compete not only with automobiles, but also with airplanes, offering a more comfortable, accessible trip with a lower environmental impact.
As highlighted by CN Traveler, the train will be fully electric, which will significantly reduce polluting gas emissions and position it as a cleaner transportation model for the future of the United States.
The project includes modern stations with integrated services and spaces to facilitate interconnection with buses and local mobility systems. In addition, It is expected to boost tourism in Las Vegas and boost economic activity in Southern California by facilitating a steady flow of visitors and workers between the two regions.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the goal is for the line to be in service by the 2028 Olympics, although a report by KTNV predicts that operations could not begin as late as December of that year due to adjustments to the construction schedule.
A Historic Change for the United States
Beyond uniting two of the country's most dynamic cities, the Brightline West represents a fundamental step in the modernization of America's transportation infrastructure.
Its success could pave the door to the creation of new high-speed corridors in other regions, something that until now has been limited by the dependence on automobiles and the lack of investment in modern trains.
