BMW is preparing an extreme 4x4 to rival the G-Class
BMW is testing a new all-terrain vehicle, designed to challenge prestigious rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Land Rover Defender
BMW has always been associated with sporty vehicles and luxury SUVs that, although powerful, prioritize the road over other roads.
Now, the Bavarian firm seems willing to explore a territory it has never fully ventured into: a robust all-terrain vehicle with real off-road capabilities.
The rumor of a project internally called G74 has aroused great expectations in the industry.
It would not be just another SUV in the BMW range, but a radically different proposal that would mark a before and after in the history of the company. The goal is ambitious: to go head-to-head with icons like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a model that has been established as a benchmark for luxury 4x4s for more than four decades.
A long-term plan from BMW
If confirmed, this off-road vehicle would have an extended development schedule. Everything indicates that production would start in 2029, at the Spartanburg, South Carolina (USA) plant, which is already the manufacturing base for a large part of BMW SUVs.
Unlike the current X5 or X7, designed for comfort on the road, the G74 would seek to shine on demanding terrain, with a mechanical and structural approach focused on adventure.
For this model, the CLAR platform would be used, the same one that supports the current X5, but with profound modifications. The bodywork would have a more square and functional design, with defined angles that favor visibility and resistance.
In addition, lower protections, locking differentials and specific driving modes for 4 × 4 would be included, something unprecedented in the BMW offer.
The natural replacement for the BMW XM
The arrival of this off-road vehicle would coincide with the farewell of the BMW XM, a high-performance hybrid SUV that did not achieve the expected commercial results. Its market exit is planned for 2028, leaving free space in the portfolio.
Thus, the G74 would not only assume the role of flagship, but would also represent a strategic reorientation towards vehicles capable of combining luxury and true off-road capability.
Of course, the message is clear: BMW wants a model that speaks the same language of adventure, without giving up the standards of refinement that have made the brand famous.
High-caliber competitors
In this new scenario, the rivals are clear. In addition to the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, an icon that has evolved while keeping its essence intact, the Land Rover Defender also appears as a natural competitor.
Both models have managed to gain ground in the luxury 4x4 niche, a segment where exclusivity is combined with mechanical ruggedness.
By introducing the G74, BMW would try to seduce customers looking for something different: a vehicle with the prestige of the German brand, but adapted to trips outside the city. It would be an alternative that until now did not exist in the firm's catalog.
A precedent: the xOffroad package
Although it has never had a true 4x4 in its portfolio, BMW has flirted with this idea. It did so by offering the xOffroad package on the X5, a kit that added protections, All-Terrain tires and specific modes for driving on difficult terrain.
However, that was more of an optional add-on than a true comprehensive off-road approach.
The G74, on the other hand, would seek to be a model conceived from the ground up with that mission: climbing rocks, fording rivers and overcoming obstacles like a professional , without abandoning comfort and cutting-edge technology. The combination of ruggedness and luxury is the same formula that has made the G-Class an object of global desire.
Everything indicates that the design of the G74 will have a marked influence on the functional aspect. The language of aggressive lines and square surfaces would not only respond to an aesthetic issue, but also a practical one, optimizing visibility and structural resistance.
Inside, a level of finishes and cutting-edge technology is expected, with advanced infotainment systems, luxury materials and driving aids that position it as an uncompromising premium vehicle.
The difference will be that this time the priority will not be road speed, but versatility on any terrain.
If everything goes according to plan, 2029 will mark a historic milestone for BMW: the debut of its first vehicle conceived from the beginning as a high-performance off-roader level.
