PM Modi is currently on a visit to America. Meanwhile, a senior White House official said on Thursday that the US would open two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. At the same time, India will set up a mission in Seattle to promote people-to-people ties.
The official said the US issued 125,000 visas to Indian students last year. Indian students are set to become the largest foreign student community in the United States, with a 20 percent increase in the last year alone.
The official said the US intends to open new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad. India will also set up its consulate in Seattle. In addition, it is also keen to announce another new consulate in the US.
The US State Department is going to launch a pilot program later this year to decide on domestic renewals of some petition-based temporary work visas, the official said. India currently has five embassies. These embassies are located in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta.
