Survey revealed that more than 20% of Americans buy food with their savings
With food prices increasing 32% in the past 12 months, affordability is one of the biggest concerns for American families
According to a survey conducted and recently published by the Urban Institute, more than 20% of American adults between the ages of 18 and 64 have purchased their food during 2025 with their savings; This reveals the economic pressure that many families are facing due to the high cost of living.
The analysis also details that 35% of those surveyed have paid for their supermarket purchases with a credit card, while more than 5% paid with cash from loans. “Food represents one of the largest expenses in the family budget,” the survey noted.
According to the report, the price of food has increased by nearly 32%, so affordability is one of the problems that continues to cause concern among the average population.
The Urban Institute researchers also detailed which foods have increased the most in price in the last 12 months, with fruits and vegetables being the ones that increased their cost the most with an increase of 5.3%, followed by meat, fish and eggs with 2.6%, and cereals and bakery products with 2.4% more.
Finally, the Urban Institute highlights that to carry out the survey, more than 7,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 64 were interviewed between 2017 and 2024, in addition to 2,500 seniors over 65 years of age, where it was determined that the increase in prices, especially of food, is one of the main financial concerns of American families.
