Content creator Sara Gilson, 43, died on July 23 in a suspected murder-suicide in Owasso, Oklahoma, after her husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey, 48, broke into her home and shot her before taking his own life, authorities said.

The case has attracted attention because, days before the crime, Gilson had published a video on TikTok in which she made reference to the accusations of alleged sexual misconduct that weighed on her husband during the couple's separation process.

Video on TikTok made reference to complaints against her husband

On July 11, Gilson participated in a viral TikTok trend known as the “Netflix documentary,” in which users pretend to be interviewed for a documentary.

In her post she wrote: “Preparing for when Netflix releases a documentary about my future ex-husband, who I just discovered is a pedophile.” In the description he added: “I wish I was joking.”

The video accumulated more than six million views.

The statements made by Gilson referenced complaints previously filed against Duffey. However, he was never arrested or formally charged for these allegations, according to the information available.

There were protection orders in force

According to court documents, the marriage began to deteriorate years earlier.

In 2021, Gilson filed for two protective orders against her husband, although both were dismissed because she failed to appear in court.

Subsequently, on June 10 of this year, he filed a new application for emergency protection, in which he claimed that Duffey possessed a firearm, had threatened to commit suicide, and subsequently disappeared.

A judge ordered Duffey to leave the family home and prohibited him from coming within 100 yards of Gilson. The measure was extended on June 23 and remained in force until August 24.

Another complaint involved a teenage girl

That same June 10, the mother of a 15-year-old girl also filed a protective order against Duffey.

That request stated that the man, a youth basketball team coach, allegedly kissed and inappropriately touched the minor. The mother assured that another coach witnessed the incident.

In addition, the complaint indicated that Duffey had sent messages to the teenager, invited her to a hotel room during a tournament and offered her money to keep quiet.

At the time of his death, Duffey had not been arrested or faced criminal charges related to those allegations.

It also emerged that a report was filed with the Owasso Police Department, although it has not been publicly reported if there was an open criminal investigation.

Police investigate murder-suicide

Authorities reported that, on July 23, Duffey entered Gilson's home despite the court restraining order.

According to the police version, the man shot his wife and later took his own life.

Days before the crime, Gilson had shared other posts on TikTok related to the process he was going through.

In one of them she appeared with a friend on a boat with the message that female friendships “literally save your life.” In another post, made from a yacht, he wrote: “May whatever that was never find me again.”

Family highlights her role as mother

Following his death, family and friends organized a fundraising campaign to support Gilson's two children.

In the message released, they noted that the woman was “an incredible mother” and that her children were the center of her life.

The authorities continue with the investigations of the case, while Gilson's death has generated wide repercussions on social networks due to the publications he made before the attack.
