Shopping at Walmart online could become good news for some customers in Los Angeles County. The retail chain reached an agreement to resolve accusations related to the handling of consumers' personal data and, as part of that process, will allocate a fund to make payments to those who meet certain requirements.
The agreement involves both Walmart and Sam's Club, companies that were accused of allegedly sharing their customers' personal information with third-party advertising companies without their authorization. The resolution prevents the case from going to court, as both sides reached a settlement before a formal lawsuit was filed.
According to Los Angeles County authorities, the investigation arose from the alleged use of third-party tracking tools on Walmart's website. These technologies would have collected personal data and details about purchases made by users to share them with companies dedicated to advertising.
As part of the settlement, Walmart agreed to pay nearly $1 million ($908,815). That amount will cover restitution for affected consumers, civil penalties and legal fees arising from the case.
After the agreement was announced, Walmart indicated that it is satisfied to have resolved the matter. The company did not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to settle the dispute through this settlement with county authorities.
Who can receive a payment?
The agreement contemplates the creation of a fund of $388,815 dollars, destined exclusively to make payments to eligible clients.
To be part of the compensation program, people must have visited the Walmart website between January 1, 2020 and May 20, 2024.
For now, the authorities have not reported the amount that each consumer will receive, since it will depend on the fund distribution process.
In the event that part of the money is not claimed, the remaining resources will be transferred to the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs (DCBA).
Customer privacy, at the center of the agreement
County authorities took advantage of the announcement to remember the importance of protecting the personal data of those who make purchases online.
“It is critical to protect consumers' personal financial information from being shared with third parties without their consent,” said Rafael Carbajal, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer and Business Affairs. “Protecting consumer privacy is essential in this digital age.”
