NMC New Guidelines For MBBS: As per the new rules issued by the National Medical Commission, students pursuing MBBS will have to complete the course within nine years from the date of admission. While they will get only four attempts to qualify in the first year. In the newly released Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 or GMER-23, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has said that there will be a common counseling for admission to undergraduate courses in all medical institutions in the country based on NEET-UG merit.

In a gazette notification issued on June 2, the NMC said that under no circumstances, a student will be allowed more than four attempts for first year (MBBS) and no student will be allowed to graduate after nine years from the date of admission to the course. Will also not be allowed to continue medical courses. As per the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021, a student admitted to an undergraduate medical education program shall not be deemed to have completed his graduation until he has completed his rotating medical internship.

The gazette states, "Without prejudice to anything contained in the extant rules or other NMC rules, COMMON COUNSELING FOR ADMISSION TO UNDERGRADUATE COURSES IN MEDICAL FOR ALL MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS IN INDIA ON THE BASE OF THE MERIT LIST OF NEET-UG Will be." The counseling will be purely based on the seat matrix provided by NMC, provided that the common counseling may have multiple rounds, as may be required.

The Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) will issue guidelines for the conduct of common counselling, and the designated authority under section 17 will conduct counseling in accordance with the published guidelines. The government will appoint a designated authority for counseling and decide and notify its agency and methodology for all undergraduate seats. The new rules state that no medical institution shall admit any candidate to the Graduate Medical Education (GME) course in violation of these rules.
