The Delhi High Court allowed a college in Tamil Nadu to increase the number of students for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-UG 2022 session. In the petition, the number of students was allowed to be increased from 150 to 250. During the hearing, Justice Sanjeev Narula said that there is a need to increase the medical infrastructure to meet the growing need of more qualified doctors to serve the country's population.
The court has given permission to hear a petition by Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu. In the petition, an appeal was made to reject the request to increase the number of students from 150 to 250. Justice Sanjeev Narula, during this time, said that to meet the growing need of qualified doctors, it is necessary to improve the medical infrastructure and the high-end colleges should not be denied the opportunity to increase the number of medical professionals.
The petition appealed to the court to direct the NMC to grant approval letter to the college to admit 250 students per year from the academic year 2021-22. Advocate T. Singhdeo, representing NMC, said that the commission had conducted a surprise inspection of the college and only 200 seats could be allowed on the request of the college.
The counsel for the college said that the institute is ready to increase the number of seats to 250 and if permission is not given for the same, there will be huge wastage of resources. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, the court has allowed the college to increase the seat count from 150 to 250.
