After the death of Johan Sebastián Durán in an ICE operation, collection exceeds $100 thousand
The collection seeks to cover funeral expenses, legal support and the repatriation of the Colombian who died in Maine
Relatives of Colombian Joan Sebastián Guerrero, murdered on Monday in Maine by an agent of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE), started fundraising to cover legal expenses, funeral services and the repatriation of the body.
The GoFundMe account has already raised $100,796 in just one day, thanks to more than 1,800 donations.
“With a broken heart, we are raising funds to help his family cover legal expenses, funeral services and the repatriation of his body to Colombia, where his parents are waiting to give him a Christian burial,” the message indicates.
After Durán's death, his partner and three-year-old daughter, who accompanied him at the time of the shooting, "face a future of pain and uncertainty," the campaign notes.
Durán, 26 years old and who, according to his family, worked two jobs, died at the hands of an ICE agent who was carrying out an operation in search of an immigrant with a deportation order, as part of the immigration policy promoted by President Donald Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), under which ICE operates, alleged that the agents fired for public safety reasons.
As explained by the agency, Durán's vehicle was traveling in the same direction as the wanted person and, when trying to flee, the agents opened fire.
Near the place where he died, in Biddeford, neighbors placed flowers and messages of solidarity, as well as signs rejecting ICE. Among them are phrases such as: “ICE, out of our neighborhoods,” “Murder is against the law” and “A man was lynched here on Monday,” according to CNN.
The money raised will be given to Durán's sister, who will manage the resources to meet the family's needs. The organizers also asked to respect their privacy.
