Gil “Morita” is left out of the Tri Sub-20 call for the Concacaf Pre-World Cup and Pre-Olympic
The absence of the 17-year-old World Cup player is the surprise on the "Minitri" list to seek a ticket to the U-20 World Cup and Los Angeles 2028
The Mexico U-20 team announced this Monday the call with which it will compete in the Concacaf Pre-World Cup and Pre-Olympic, a tournament that will grant tickets to the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The main novelty is the absence of Gilberto Mora, one of the biggest promises in Mexican soccer.
The 17-year-old midfielder, who recently played in the 2026 World Cup with the senior team, was not considered by coach Álex Diego for the competition that will be held from July 24 to August 9.
After establishing himself as one of the revelations of the 2026 World Cup, Gilberto Mora will not appear with the Mexico U-20 team in the Concacaf qualifying tournament.
The youth player started three of the four games he played with the national team in the World Cup, where Mexico was eliminated in the round of 16 against England.
Diego Reyes and Henrique Simeone lead the call
Without Gilberto Mora, one of the main figures on the squad will be Diego Reyes, an 18-year-old forward who plays for Flamengo in Brazil.
Also notable is the presence of Henrique Simeone, a 19-year-old Mexican-Brazilian midfielder, trained in the youth ranks of Botafogo and currently a player for Tigres UANL. In goal, Artemio Olvera, Atlético de San Luis goalkeeper, stands out.
Mexico will look for a ticket to the U-20 World Cup and Los Angeles 2028
The Concacaf championship will grant four places for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
In addition, the team that wins the title will get a direct ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
The Mexico U-20 team was placed in Group B, where it will face Guatemala, Costa Rica and Antigua and Barbuda.
Group A is made up of the United States, Cuba, El Salvador and Haiti, while Group C is made up of Honduras, Panama, Canada and Jamaica.
