At least two people were hospitalized after shootings at South Carolina's largest shopping center
Police reported that the incident is contained, several people are in custody and there is no active threat to the public.
Several people were injured this Saturday after a shooting occurred inside the Haywood Mall shopping center in Greenville, South Carolina, considered the largest in the state.
The incident occurred around 1:00 in the afternoon and caused widespread police mobilization, evacuations and scenes of panic among shoppers and workers.
The Greenville Police Department reported that two people were taken to hospitals for medical attention. So far, authorities have not specified the severity of the injuries nor have they confirmed the total number of those affected.
Police also confirmed that several people have been taken into custody as the investigation continues.
“The situation remains active, but contained,” said a police spokesperson, who added that there is currently no danger to the public.
Evacuations and emergency operations
Crews from the Greenville Fire Department and other security agencies participated in the evacuation efforts of the commercial complex.
Authorities warned that completely clearing the area could take time and announced the indefinite closure of the shopping center.
As a support measure, the city's public transportation system, Greenlink, enabled an air-conditioned bus to temporarily receive evacuees.
According to preliminary reports and testimonies spread on social networks, the shooting began in the food area of the establishment.
Videos shared by witnesses showed officers holding and questioning some people in the mall parking lot.
Witnesses describe moments of chaos
People who were inside the complex reported scenes of confusion and races towards the exits.
A social media user stated that buyers and employees abandoned merchandise and sought shelter as soon as they heard the explosions.
Others pointed out that relatives remained hidden in warehouses and internal areas of some stores while the operation was taking place.
Authorities have not confirmed whether those detained are directly linked to the shooting nor have they reported possible motives.
Security background
The incident occurs after the shopping center reinforced security measures over the last year following several episodes of altercations and fights reported within its facilities.
Haywood Mall, opened in 1980, has approximately 1.2 million square feet and is home to dozens of retail establishments and restaurants.
The investigation remains open and authorities have asked to avoid speculation while testimonies and evidence from the scene are collected.
