Five people were injured Friday afternoon during a shooting at the end of a funeral service at a church in Detroit, Michigan, authorities reported.

The event occurred at the Greater Love Tabernacle Church, located on Plymouth Road, where family and friends were saying goodbye to a young woman who recently died in a traffic accident.

A fight preceded the shooting

According to Detroit Police, the incident began shortly before 6:00 p.m., when a fight broke out as attendees were leaving the temple.

Authorities indicated that the alleged attacker pulled out a firearm and fired several shots into the crowd.

Four people were hit by the suspect's bullets before an officer who was deployed in the area responded with his service weapon.

The agent wounded the alleged attacker and later detained him.

All the injured will survive

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison reported that the officer was unharmed during the intervention.

Authorities indicated that the five injured people, including the alleged attacker, are around 20 years old.

According to Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, the victims suffered lower extremity injuries and are all expected to survive.

Bettison explained that police had deployed officers to the scene due to prior information suggesting the possibility of violent incidents during the funeral.

However, authorities indicated that it has not yet been determined what caused the fight that led to the shooting.

The police chief described the officer who intervened as a “hero.”

"Our officer is absolutely a hero. He doesn't show up to work expecting to have to deal with a situation like this, but he saw the threat and acted," Bettison said.

Authorities rule out a risk for the community

Mayor Sheffield regretted what happened and expressed her solidarity with the victims and their families.

“I thank the Detroit Police Department for the intelligence work that allowed us to have officers on the scene and for the courage they demonstrated today,” he said in a statement.

The church reported that it is collaborating with the authorities in the investigation and assured that it will continue to accompany the affected community.

For its part, the funeral home in charge of the service expressed that the act of violence interrupted a moment that should have been dedicated to the memory and support of the family.

Authorities consider this to be an isolated incident and stated that there is no threat to public safety while investigations continue.
