79-year-old man arrested for unsolved 1981 crime thanks to DNA on soda bottles
Larry Dean Brown was booked into the Tarrant County Correctional Facility on charges of intentional murder.
A 79-year-old man was arrested in connection with a cold case from 1981, the Grapevine Police Department said in a news release.
Larry Dean Brown was booked into the Tarrant County Correctional Facility on charges of intentional murder after being shipped from Colorado.
The arrest was made in connection with the death of 35-year-old Beverly Bruneau. On Feb. 13, 1981, Bruneau's boyfriend returned home from work and found her dead on the living room floor, with an electrical cord around her neck and blood on her face, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, WFAA and CBS News reported, citing an arrest affidavit.
Investigators at the time indicated that the house showed signs of a struggle and observed that Bruneau had suffered multiple injuries. It was later determined that Bruneau died from strangulation.
Officers met with Brown when they visited his home to speak with his wife, identified as Thelma Brown, who was Bruneau's best friend. At the time, Bruneau and Thelma were co-owners of a home in Dallas that had been damaged by a fire, media reported, citing the affidavit.
Brown is accused of pressuring Bruneau into signing fraudulent insurance documents with inflated repair costs.
Following Bruneau's refusal, Thelma allegedly forged his signature on insurance paperwork after his death.
The case remained unsolved until evidence was reexamined in 2010, when investigators identified the DNA profile of an unknown man, but no match was found in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), according to media.
When the case was reopened, detectives collaborated with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office in Colorado, where Brown resided at the time, to obtain DNA from soda bottles found in his trash.
Detectives later received results indicating Brown could not be ruled out as the source of the blood found on Bruneau's nightgown, media reported.
“The arrest follows an extensive investigation by detectives and represents a significant development in the case,” the Grapevine Police Department stated.
"As part of the ongoing investigation, additional forensic testing is being conducted, including confirmatory DNA analysis. Investigators are awaiting those results before releasing further details."
