An officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Nevada, died this Tuesday after being injured during an armed confrontation with a man who, according to authorities, was walking down a city street while displaying a firearm and exhibiting erratic behavior.
The suspect also died at the scene after the exchange of gunfire, authorities said during a news conference.
Reports warned about an armed man on public roads
According to Captain Adam Seely, police received shortly before 4:00 p.m. multiple emergency calls alerting about a person walking near an intersection while waving a firearm in the air and acting erratically.
Given the reports, the Police Department deployed agents and drones to locate the suspect.
According to Sheriff Kevin McMahill, when the agents arrived at the scene, an armed confrontation occurred.
Authorities indicated that the suspect opened fire on the police officers and that at least one of the officers responded with gunfire.
The man was hit by the projectiles and died at the scene.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the officers was also hit by a bullet and was rushed to a hospital, where he later died.
The officer was 30 years old and a Navy veteran
McMahill reported that the deceased police officer was 30 years old, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and had joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department in 2023.
At this time, authorities have not publicly revealed his identity.
“I have many police officers grieving and a community grieving as well,” McMahill said, referring to the officer's death.
Authorities did not offer additional information about the identity of the suspect or the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
The case remains under investigation as detectives continue to gather evidence to clarify what happened.
