Liam Conejo visits the cabin of the Delta plane that took him back home to Minneapolis
Liam Conejo, boy detained by ICE, returned home to Minneapolis and experienced a special moment visiting the Delta plane's cabin
Liam Conejo Ramos, a five-year-old boy who was recently detained by immigration agents along with his father, returned to his home in Minneapolis after being released from a detention center in Texas by order of a federal judge.
Liam's return was marked by a special gesture from the crew of the Delta plane that transported him, since Before the flight, he was invited into the cockpit, where he was able to sit in the pilot's seat and learn how the plane works, even moving a lever under the pilots' supervision. This experience made the flight an emotional and memorable moment for the boy and his family, celebrating Liam's and his father's release after the difficult days at the detention center. His father, Adrian Conejo Arias, expressed his joy upon boarding the plane. "I am so happy to finally be going home. Liam is very happy to be back and will see his mom and brother again." Little Liam, in Spanish, simply commented, "Good," reflecting his relief and excitement. Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro, who visited the family at the detention center and accompanied them for part of their return, described the scene as a show of support and humanity toward asylum seekers.
Liam's story captured national attention after he was detained while returning from preschool with his father on January 20, sparking criticism of immigration practices involving minorities and intensifying the debate about the need for more humane immigration enforcement procedures.
His return also symbolizes the judicial and political pressure to ensure that children are treated with protection and dignity, transforming a traumatic process into an experience that, at least during the flight, allowed him to smile and recapture some of the normalcy of his childhood.
