Man who murdered Minnesota legislator and her husband sentenced to life in prison
The person responsible for the attack admitted to having planned the crimes for months and will not be eligible for parole.
Vance Boelter, the man who pleaded guilty to murdering the Democratic legislator of the Minnesota House of Representatives, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark Hortman, was sentenced this Thursday to two consecutive life sentences, according to several media outlets.
Boelter, 59, has been sentenced for the deaths of Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in June of last year, and for the shooting of state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
Last month, the man pleaded guilty to the charges against him in a plea deal, after which the US Department of Justice announced that it would not seek the death penalty for him.
The sentence rules out any possibility of parole
The judge, who, according to CBS News, stated during the hearing that it was the longest sentence he had imposed in his career, handed down two consecutive 40-year life sentences against Boelter.
The sentence does not contemplate the possibility of conditional release.
Boelter previously testified in court that he spent months identifying his intended victims and that he intended to kill them.
In the records, investigators found a list with a dozen names of Democratic legislators and abortion rights advocates who were supposedly targets he wanted to attack.
On June 14, 2025, Boelter posed as a police officer and injured Democratic state Senator John Hoffman and his wife in their residence, then murdered fellow Democrat Melissa Hortman, Speaker Emeritus of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband in their home.
After shooting the two legislators and their partners, he exchanged shots with the Police and fled in a vehicle that he bought in cash and which he later abandoned about four kilometers from his home, in the town of Green Isle, Minnesota.
Boelter was arrested two days later, after an intense search and capture operation.
