Michoacán councilor tells how she has been threatened by members of the CJNG
Martha Lilia Cortés Rangel received several threats for intervening in matters related to public administration and security in Apatzingán
The councilor of the municipality of Apatzingán, Michoacán, Martha Lilia Cortés Rangel, reported having received death threats allegedly from members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who warned her that they would murder her and throw her body into the river if she did not abandon her activities.
According to the public complaint made by the official, the intimidation began with telephone calls and later escalated with messages in which the alleged members of the criminal group directly threatened her.
Among the messages broadcast by the councilor is one in which the aggressors warn: “We are going to throw her in pieces into the river,” in addition to demanding that she stop intervening in matters related to the public administration and security of the municipality, according to the weekly Proceso.
After making the threats public, Cortés Rangel requested the intervention of state and federal authorities to guarantee his safety and that of his family, in addition to investigating the origin of the intimidation.
The councilor affirmed that she will continue to perform her duties despite the threats, although she acknowledged concern about the risk she faces.
So far, the authorities have not reported on any people detained in relation to these events, while it is expected that the complaint will be integrated into the corresponding investigations.
This is yet another act of violence in the Tierra Caliente region of Michoacán, where different organized crime groups maintain disputes over territorial control, a situation that has led to attacks against public servants and representatives of different levels of government.
