Karol G denied accusations of plagiarism for “Gatúbela”

After several months, Karol G has responded to accusations of plagiarism for “Gatúbela”. Earlier this year, the Colombian singer was sued for alleged plagiarism over the song on her latest album, Mañana será bonito (2023).
This week, lawyers for Karol G and Universal Music Group categorically denied accusations of plagiarism by producers Ocean Vibes (Jack Hernández) and Alfr3d Beats (Dick Alfredo Caballero Rodríguez).
“Defendants deny having interpolated, sampled, used, or copied Plaintiffs’ work,” a legal document filed with the court states.
Furthermore, Karol G’s lawyers maintain that they will be able to prove that “Gatúbela” was created independently, suggesting that they have evidence supporting the song’s original authorship.
The plaintiffs allege that Karol G’s song copies essential elements of her song “Punto G,” released six weeks before the premiere of “Gatúbela” in 2022.
The lawsuit The producers’ report includes a report from an independent musicologist, who claims that the synth riff and vocal melody of the chorus of “Catwoman” are “extremely similar” to those of “G-Spot.” However, Karol G’s legal team called the report “biased” and “patently inappropriate,” invalidating its findings. One of the most contentious points in the case is an Instagram conversation between Alfr3d Beats and DJ Maff, Karol G’s producer, who allegedly admitted to copying “G-Spot.” “Don’t tell anyone,” he responded with laughing emojis when confronted about the similarities between the two songs. However, Karol G’s lawyers argue that the comment was “sarcastic” and does not constitute an admission of guilt.
