Shanie Blais: Karol G changed the way that I move and connect with music
The dancer, who starred in the film Wicked, talks about her experience with the Colombian artist
When Canadian Shanie Blais began dancing in singer Karol G's shows, she was still working on the filming of the movie Wicked, a production that has brought her talent to the big screen internationally.
What really struck me about that experience was her passion and tireless work ethic, not to perfect things, but to make them the best they could be. That mentality stayed with me and definitely carried over into Wicked™ and everything I do, explained the dancer and choreographer.
Shanie Blais says the successful Colombian singer changed her world.
I fell in love with a completely new culture. I had never been so immersed in Latin music and now I listen to all its genres constantly. "Karol is so true to her roots that it made me appreciate the richness of Latin music and how powerful it is to embrace and celebrate your origins," she said.
Her first concerts alongside the star occurred in 2023, starting with single performances in Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, and Chile. From then on, she participated in the "Tomorrow Will Be Beautiful" tour, for which she says she is "eternally grateful."
"Karol G completely changed the way I move and connect with music. I fell in love with dancing from a place of pure feeling and joy. For me, Latin music is pure celebration. "It's heartwarming, exciting, and brings people together, whether they're close friends or complete strangers. It reminded me that dance is for sharing," said Blais.
The Montreal-born artist, currently based in Los Angeles, began dancing at the age of four. Her natural talent and undeniable presence have positioned her as one of the most sought-after in the industry. Despite the risks, her move to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams has been a decision she has never regretted.
"Montreal gave me my roots, my heart, my creativity, my passion, and a deep love for performing. I will always feel grounded and connected to my friends and family back home, who support me and keep me grounded, she says.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, encouraged her to dream big.
Each part nourishes a different side of me, and together they keep me inspired and constantly growing as an artist, she says.
Shanie was one of the few Los Angeles dancers selected in London for Wicked: The Movie, alongside figures like Ariana Grande. Her versatility is also reflected in her work in music videos for artists like Camila Cabello Living Proof.
