Amy Winehouse's father takes legal action against two close friends of the singer
The father of singer Amy Winehouse filed a lawsuit against Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay, who were friends of his daughter
A civil lawsuit led the British High Court to examine the controversial disposition of nearly 150 personal items attributed to the legendary singer Amy Winehouse. Mitch Winehouse, the artist's father, filed a lawsuit against Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay, two of his daughter's friends, accusing them of the improper sale of said belongings. The conflict stems from an auction held in Los Angeles in 2021, which raised approximately $1.4 million. Of that total, 30% was donated to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. However, Mitch Winehouse later discovered that around 150 items—mostly clothing—had been contributed by Parry and Gourlay. He alleges that these items belonged to the singer and that the defendants made an unjustified profit of approximately £730,000. The accounts presented to Deputy Magistrates Sarah Clarke KC are diametrically opposed. On one hand, Mitch Winehouse and his lawyer, Henry Legge KC, maintain that Parry and Gourlay “deliberately concealed” their claim of ownership over the items before the auction. Winehouse admitted he had no concrete proof that the items were stolen from a secure storage facility, but denied that his legal action was motivated by “petty jealousy,” insisting he was defending his daughter's legitimate estate. On the other hand, the defendants, both 41, defended their position by arguing that the items already belonged to them or were direct gifts from Amy Winehouse.
Naomi Parry, a designer, testified in court that, after the auction, organizer Darren Julien informed her that Mitch Winehouse “didn't understand that most of the items sold” belonged to the singer.
Parry also recounted that Amy's father went so far as to accuse them of having “stolen” items from the warehouse and, more seriously, that he offered them £187,000 to make “all this disappear,” an offer she flatly refused, stating: “He would rather burn the money than give her a penny.”
Parry insisted on the existence of “documentary evidence” that would prove Mitch was aware of his collections. She also detailed that she auctioned off nearly 60 items from her collection, including a minidress worn by Winehouse at her last concert in Belgrade, which sold for over £180,000.
The trial, which has already been partially held, is scheduled to conclude and resume in January, leaving the resolution of this bitter conflict between the iconic artist's family and her close friends in suspense.
Before the conflict, the singer's father and his daughter's friends had a healthy relationship. However, this incident marked the end of that harmony, and now they will face each other—again—in court. Winehouse, one of the most prominent voices of her generation, passed away in 2011 at the age of 27.
