Ricky Martin when he receives his Latin Icon Award at the MTV VMAs: We want to break borders and keep the music alive
The Puerto Rican singer was recognized for celebrating his more than three decades of artistic career and his global impact on Latin music
On a memorable night for Latin music, Ricky Martin made history at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) by becoming the first Latin artist to receive the Latin Icon Award.
The recognition, which Busta Rhymes also received, was created by MTV to honor Latin figures whose career has transcended generations and left an indelible mark on the global music industry.
The event, held at the UBS Arena in New York, witnessed an emotional moment when Ricky Martin took the stage to accept this new award, which not only celebrates his more than 30-year career, but also his fundamental role in internationalizing Spanish-language music.
In his acceptance speech, Ricky Martin dedicated the award to his children and his fans: “This is very simple. This is for all of you. Thank you so much for your applause. I'm addicted to your applause, that's why I keep coming back. It's you, not only here in the United States, but all over the world.”
Additionally, the singer reflected on his life and career: “It's been 40 years… I started when I was a baby working, and we're still here. We just want to unite countries, we just want to break borders, and we just want to keep music alive. I want to dedicate this award to my children: Mateo, Valentino, Lucia, and Ren. Everything I do, I do with you in my mind and in my heart.”
Ricky Martin also performed a medley of his hits during the ceremony, including “La Copa de la Vida (The Cup of Life),” “Pegate,” “Maria,” and “Vente pa' ca,” including a tribute to his iconic performance at the 1999 VMAs, 26 years ago, when he revolutionized pop with “Livin' la Vida Loca.”
Ricky Martin’s appearance was notable not only for the award he received, but also for his striking presence on the red carpet, where he dazzled with a modern and sophisticated look, combining an open-chest satin shirt with silver chains and a distinctive emerald green pendant.
