This fight represents an opportunity for the fighter from Guadalajara to regain ground in the division after losing his status as undisputed champion to Terence Crawford last September.
For his part, Mbilli comes into this bout as the undisputed champion of the after Crawford's move up in weight classes, although his career organization has not yet achieved widespread recognition in the international market.
The proposal of Diego Pacheco as an alternative
During his remarks, David Benavidez suggested that Diego Pacheco would have been a much more logical and attractive option for the public. Having shared training sessions with Pacheco, the Mexican-American highlights the qualities and level of popularity he has recently achieved, surpassing in visibility what Alvarez's current rival offers. David Benavidez stated to Fight Hub TV: "Nobody wants to see that crap [Mbilli vs. Canelo]. I think it would have been better if he had fought Diego Pacheco. Diego Pacheco is much more famous than Mbilli." These words reflect the fighter's frustration with the direction negotiations have taken in the super middleweight division.
Questions about the quality of the opponent
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, the current WBC light heavyweight champion, David Benavides, was blunt in his assessment of the choice of opponent for the Mexican.
The fighter believes there are other names with greater relevance and sporting merit than the French boxer to headline a card of this caliber in Saudi Arabia.David Benavidez's stance adds to a series of previous criticisms where he has pointed out that Alvarez avoids high-risk fights against the top contenders in the 168-pound division. For "Bandera Roja" (Red Flag), the inclusion of Mbilli on the main card does not meet the expectations of fans who want to see the best possible matchups in the ring.
