Social activist Teesta Setalvad was released from jail on Saturday, a day after the Supreme Court granted interim bail. The apex court on Friday granted interim bail to social activist Teesta Setalvad, arrested for allegedly fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Teesta Setalvad was lodged in the Sabarmati Central Jail here since her arrest on June 26. Setalvad was produced before Sessions Judge VA Rana for bail formalities as ordered by the Supreme Court. Special Public Prosecutor Amit Patel said, in addition to the conditions imposed by the apex court, the sessions court also imposed two other conditions. The sessions court ordered the accused Setalvad to furnish a personal bond of Rs 25,000 and not to leave India without his prior permission.

It is known that on February 27, 2002, 59 kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya were killed in the incident of burning of a coach of the Sabarmati Express near Godhra, after which riots broke out in Gujarat. A sessions court in Ahmedabad had on July 30 dismissed the bail pleas of Setalvad and former Gujarat Director General of Police R B Sreekumar in the case, saying their release would send a message to the wrongdoers that a person can even level charges and His guilt can also be forgiven. Setalvad and Sreekumar have been accused of fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in the post-Godhra riots cases.

Three people have been arrested in this case including Teesta Setalvad. Sreekumar former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt is an accused in this case. He was arrested by the Ahmedabad city crime branch in June after an FIR was registered against him under sections 468 (forgery to cheat) and 194 (framing false evidence with intent to secure punishment for offenses punishable with death) of the Indian Penal Code. was arrested. Setalvad and Sreekumar of Mumbai were arrested within days after the apex court rejected Jafri's plea.
