The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on the petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the decision to bifurcate the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

The Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on the petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the decision to bifurcate the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. A five-judge constitution bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant reserved the judgment after hearing arguments for 16 days.
The court heard the arguments of senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Gopal Subramaniam, Rajeev Dhawan, Zafar Shah, Dushyant Dave and others on the last day of hearing. The apex court said that if any counsel appearing for the petitioner or the respondent wishes to file written submissions, he may do so within the next three days. However, the court said that the written argument should not exceed two pages.
During the last 16 days of hearing, the court heard Attorney General R Venkataramani, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, senior advocates- Harish Salve, Rakesh Dwivedi, V Giri and others on behalf of the Center and the intervenors defending the abrogation of Article 370.
Lawyers question the constitutional validity of the Centre's August 5, 2019 decision to repeal the provision, the validity of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act that bifurcated the erstwhile state into two union territories, the imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir on June 20, 2018, December 19, 2018 Gave his views on various issues including imposition of President's Rule and its extension on 3rd July 2019.
Several petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 were referred to a constitution bench in 2019. Due to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019, the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
