Six Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel and a policeman were killed and 32 others were injured after a bus fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam area on Tuesday. The security personnel were returning from Amarnath Yatra duty. An official gave this information.
7 security personnel killed in the accident
A police official said the bus carrying 38 ITBP personnel and two policemen fell into a deep gorge between Chandanwadi and Pahalgam. He said two ITBP personnel died on the spot while five others later succumbed to their injuries. The condition of six injured security personnel is said to be critical. He is being taken to Srinagar by helicopter for treatment.
40 security personnel were on the bus
A senior police officer said 37 ITBP personnel and three Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel were returning from duty on the Amarnath Yatra, which has ended on August 11. An ITBP spokesperson in Delhi said, a bus carrying 40 personnel fell into a river on the side of the road allegedly due to brake failure.
Rescue operation underway
The jawans were going from Chandanwadi towards Pahalgam. The casualties are expected to rise. A Border Security Force (BSF) helicopter has been deployed to carry the casualties, the official said. Officials said that all possible help will be given to the families of the deceased jawans. We are keeping an eye on the situation. Prima facie it seems that the brakes of the bus had failed.
