Teen arrested for alleged armed robbery of lemonade stand run by two children in Boston
The children reopened the lemonade stand and received visits from community members and city representatives, including the mayor of Boston
A teenager was arrested in Boston after being identified by authorities as one of the alleged perpetrators of the robbery that occurred this week at a lemonade stand operated by two children in the south of the city.
The suspect, 14, was not publicly identified because he is a minor.
The arrest occurred two days after the incident involving David Byrne, 12, and Juliette Byrne, 11, who had set up the stall to earn money before the start of the summer holidays.
According to Boston Police, the events occurred on West Ninth Street.
The children handed over the money after one of the suspects showed a gun
Authorities indicated that two minors passed in front of the stand several times before approaching at approximately 4:45 in the afternoon.
According to the police report, the young people asked if they accepted payments through Apple Pay and, before receiving a response, one of them showed a black weapon that he was carrying in his waistband.
Later, the other suspect took the box where the children kept the money.
David said he initially thought about stopping it, but changed his mind when he saw the gun.
As he later said, his sister raised her hands and they decided to hand over the money.
The box contained approximately $50.
Authorities later recovered the container, although it no longer had any cash in it.
After the incident, the brothers left the post and told what happened to their father, who called 911.
The community responded and the children reopened the stall
After the case became widely known, neighbors and local authorities organized a show of support for the brothers.
On Friday, the children reopened the lemonade stand and received visits from community members and city representatives, including the mayor of Boston.
Juliette expressed surprise at the number of people who showed up to support them.
Additionally, according to local authorities, the family announced that a portion of the money raised will go to a community organization dedicated to the prevention of gun violence.
The arrested teenager must appear before Boston Juvenile Court.
Police reported that he faces two counts of armed robbery and two counts of illegal possession of a firearm.
Authorities indicated that the search for the second suspect continues.
