WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that since the outbreak of monkeypox began in May, 98 percent of the people infected with it are 'gay', 'bisexual' and other men who have physical relations with men . He has appealed to the people who come in the danger zone to take steps to protect themselves. The WHO chief said, 'This means that men who have sex with men should make safe choices for themselves and others. This includes reducing the number of sexual partners for the time being. Tedros said that infected persons should be isolated, gatherings involving physical contact should be avoided.

Government will constitute a task force to advise

On the other hand, the government has decided to constitute a task force to advise on monkeypox in India. According to official sources, this decision was taken in a high-level meeting held on July 26 regarding monkeypox. Several senior officials including the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister attended the meeting. The meeting was organized to review public health preparedness in view of the spread of monkeypox infection.

Four confirmed cases of monkeypox in India

So far four cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in India. Of these, three have been confirmed in Kerala while one case has been confirmed in Delhi. The National AIDS Control Organization and the Directorate General of Health Services have been asked to work out a sensitive strategy for the detection and management of monkeypox infection cases within the stipulated time. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has been advised to operate network laboratories and make arrangements for necessary diagnosis of monkeypox disease.
