A scuffle erupted between the police and Hindu Mahasabha members in Kolkata during a march to Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commission. The march was held to protest against atrocities on Hindus and minorities in Bangladesh.

Tensions ran high in Kolkata today as a peaceful march by members of the Hindu Mahasabha turned chaotic during their approach towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. The protest was organized to condemn the alleged ongoing atrocities against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, which the organization claims have escalated in recent weeks.

What Led to the Protest?

The Hindu Mahasabha had called for the march to raise awareness about the alleged violence and discrimination faced by Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. The organizers emphasized their demand for immediate intervention by the Indian government and international communities to ensure the safety and rights of minority groups in Bangladesh.

“We cannot stand silently while our brothers and sisters across the border face persecution. This march was our attempt to bring attention to their plight and urge action,” said one of the protestors, carrying a placard reading ‘Save Minorities in Bangladesh’.

The March Turns Chaotic

Hundreds of Hindu Mahasabha members gathered in central Kolkata and began their march towards the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. The demonstration started peacefully, with protestors chanting slogans and carrying banners. However, as the procession neared the high-security zone around the commission, tensions escalated.

Police, citing security concerns, had imposed restrictions on the march. Barricades were set up to prevent the protestors from reaching the vicinity of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission. When the protestors attempted to breach the barricades, a scuffle broke out between them and the police.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as the protestors pushed against the barricades, leading to a brief but intense clash. Police resorted to using mild force to disperse the crowd, while some protestors were seen shouting slogans condemning both the police action and the alleged inaction of the Indian government on the issue.

Statements from Authorities

The Kolkata Police issued a statement defending their actions, asserting that they were only ensuring law and order. “The protestors were informed about the restrictions in advance. While we respect the right to peaceful protest, the safety of diplomatic missions is paramount. Unfortunately, some participants resorted to aggressive actions, forcing us to intervene,” said a senior police officer.

No major injuries were reported during the incident, though a few protestors claimed they were manhandled by the police. Several members of the Hindu Mahasabha were detained and later released, according to official sources.

Hindu Mahasabha’s Response

Leaders of the Hindu Mahasabha strongly condemned the police’s handling of the situation, accusing them of suppressing their democratic right to protest. “This is an insult to the cause we are fighting for. Instead of supporting our efforts to highlight the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, the authorities chose to use force against us,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

They reiterated their demands for the Indian government to take up the issue with the Bangladeshi authorities and ensure the safety and dignity of minorities in the neighboring country. “We will not be deterred by today’s events. Our fight for justice will continue,” the spokesperson added.

Public Reactions

The incident has sparked varied reactions from the public and political commentators. While some have expressed solidarity with the protestors, others have criticized the disruption caused by the march.

“Raising awareness about the plight of minorities is important, but creating chaos in a city does not solve the issue. Such protests need to be organized in a more constructive manner,” said local resident Arpita Roy, who was caught in the traffic jam caused by the march.

Meanwhile, on social media, hashtags like #SaveHindusInBangladesh and #KolkataProtests trended as netizens debated the merits and consequences of the protest.

The Larger Issue

The Hindu Mahasabha’s protest comes amidst ongoing reports of violence and discrimination against minorities in Bangladesh. Human rights groups and activists have often raised concerns about the safety of Hindu communities, particularly during religious festivals or politically charged periods.

International organizations have called upon the Bangladeshi government to ensure the protection of all its citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds. While the Bangladeshi authorities have denied any systemic targeting of minorities, incidents of communal violence continue to draw criticism from various quarters.

A Day of Conflict

Today’s events in Kolkata highlight the complexities surrounding protests on sensitive international issues. While the Hindu Mahasabha’s cause has found resonance among many, the confrontation with the police raises questions about the balance between the right to protest and maintaining public order.

As the dust settles, the focus now shifts to whether this demonstration will lead to tangible actions or remain another flashpoint in the ongoing narrative surrounding minority rights in Bangladesh. For now, both sides remain firm in their stances, with the Hindu Mahasabha pledging to continue their fight and the police reiterating their commitment to upholding law and order.
