The conversation that many families would prefer to avoid may be one of the most important of adolescence. In the United States, almost three in four young people between the ages of 13 and 17 reported having viewed pornography on the Internet, either intentionally or accidentally. More than half said their first contact occurred before they turned 14 and the average exposure was just 12 years, according to a national survey by Common Sense Media.

Data shows that waiting until children are “old enough” can mean arriving late. Access does not only occur on adult sites: it can also occur through social networks, messages sent by peers, seemingly innocent searches, pop-ups or recommendation algorithms.

Faced with this reality, specialists in education and psychology agree that the most effective response is not silence or an isolated prohibition. The goal should be to help children and adolescents interpret what they find and prevent these videos from becoming their main source of sexual education.

Pornography can appear before parents imagine it

The Teens and Pornography report, compiled from a representative sample of 1,358 American teenagers, found that 54% had seen pornography for the first time at age 13 or earlier. 15% stated that they had their first contact at the age of 10 or even earlier.

For many parents, discovering pornographic content on a child's phone or computer can cause fear, anger, or bewilderment. However, an impulsive reaction can make it difficult for the child to ask for help again.
