The political battle in Washington over the war against Iran added a new chapter after the Senate refused to advance with a measure that sought to limit the military authority of President Donald Trump.

Although the House of Representatives passed a resolution demanding the withdrawal of US forces from hostilities with Iran, the initiative was left with virtually no chance of success after senators failed to muster the necessary votes.

Earlier, the vote in the House ended with 214 votes in favor and 208 against. Four Republicans joined the Democrats: Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Thomas Massie.

Senate rejects stopping Trump's military actions

Hours after the House vote, the Senate failed to pass its own war powers resolution. The proposal obtained 47 votes in favor and 49 against.

The only Republican to support the measure was Senator Susan Collins, while Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted against it.

According to CNN, the result reflects that, although there is concern among some lawmakers about the duration of the conflict, Congress does not yet have enough bipartisan support to impose limits on Trump's military decisions.

The vote represents the House's fifth attempt to restrict the Trump administration's actions in Iran and the second time such an initiative has moved forward.

The House seeks to regain authority over military decisions

The approved resolution represents a new attempt by Congress to reclaim its constitutional role in authorizing armed conflict. However, since it is a concurrent resolution, it would not have to reach Trump's desk for his signature, so it would not have the force of law.

Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal, promoter of the measure, defended the vote as an obligation of Congress.

“This is a vote of conscience,” Jayapal said, noting that lawmakers must “reaffirm their authority on war” and send a message that “this war must end.”
