Trump Administration Sues 6 Democratic States For Not Delivering Voter Registration Rolls
DOJ accused states of not adequately responding to questions about their voter registration procedures
The Department of Justice (DOJ), through the Civil Rights Division, announced the filing of federal lawsuits against the states of California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania for not providing voter registration rolls.
This legal action seeks to force election officials in each state to provide all voter information contained on their voter rolls, including names, dates of birth, driver's license numbers, and partial Social Security numbers.
The DOJ warned that all states have a responsibility to ensure voter rolls are accurate, accessible, and secure; and that those that fail to comply will be taken to court.
US Attorney Pam Bondi alleges that the lack of that information prevents her from determining whether states are complying with list-maintenance requirements under the federal law known as the Help America Vote Act.
“Clean voter rolls are the foundation of free and fair elections,” Bondi said in a statement Thursday.
“States are obligated to safeguard American elections by complying with our federal election. laws,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. “A clean voter roll protects Americans from voter fraud and abuse, and restores their confidence that elections in their states are conducted properly, with integrity, and in compliance with the law.”
However, state secretaries of state have expressed concerns about how this information will be used.
For example, California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber raised concerns about voter privacy protections.
