Trump believes Putin is serious When talking about achieving peace with Ukraine
The US president held a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin prior to the meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida
US President Donald Trump said this Sunday that he has not set a deadline for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, but that after his conversation today with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, he believes that Putin is “serious” about reaching an agreement.
The US president argued that this agreement would have to be because reached “too many people are dying.”
Trump made this statement before beginning his meeting today with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his residence in Florida to discuss the peace proposal drawn up by both countries to end the conflict with Russia, which is now entering its fourth year.
When asked by CNN if he believes Putin is serious about peace, Trump replied: “Yes, I think so, I think they both are.”
However, when asked if today's meeting will lead to an agreement, Trump was more evasive.
“It depends; I think we have the basis for an agreement,” he said, adding that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been “difficult” to resolve, but that “we will achieve it; we will have a great meeting today.”
Trump also indicated that he will speak again with Putin as well as with European leaders at the end of the meeting, in which the 20-point proposal, released this week by Zelensky, will be discussed. Zelensky held a meeting in Canada with Prime Minister Mark Carney before arriving in Florida.
Among the Ukrainian officials who accompanied Zelensky to his meeting with Trump was the Minister of Economy, Oleksii Sobolev. EFE
