Johan Vasquez, captain of Genoa at the beginning of the 2025-26 season
The Mexican defender led his team to victory in the Italian Cup and officially wore the badge.
Genoa started the 2025-26 season with a smile and a new leader on the pitch. Mexican center back Johan Vasquez made his official debut as team captain in the 3-0 win over Vicenza in the first round of the Coppa Italia.
The night not only resulted in a place in the next round, but also a solid performance by the Sonoran, who was directly involved in one of the goals.
The first goal came thanks to Valentin Carboni, who opened the scoring early in the match. However, the key moment for Johan came shortly before halftime. Following a corner, he put pressure on his marker inside the area, leading Francesco Benassai to commit an own goal that made it 2-0 and gave Patrick Vieira's team some peace of mind heading into the locker room.
In the second half, Nicolae Stanciu sealed the victory with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, a goal that ended up sealing the match and sealing qualification. With the result, Genoa is moving forward with a firm step and strengthening its confidence for what is to come.
Johan Vasquez's leadership is consolidated
Vasquez's captaincy did not come about unexpectedly. The defender had already worn the armband in some matches last season, but now the appointment is official. According to the coaching staff, his leadership, consistency, and commanding voice in the locker room made him the natural choice to lead the team.
During preseason, the Mexican had already served as captain, although without formal confirmation. The season's debut served to seal that status. "It's an honor and a responsibility. I will always give everything for this team," Johan told the Italian media at the end of the match.
His role goes beyond defense. On the field, he organizes the defense, corrects positioning, and motivates his teammates in key moments. Outside of that, he's a key player for new signings and a bridge between the squad and the fans.
