Liverpool retires the number 20 in memory of Diogo Jota
An eternal gesture for an unforgettable player
Liverpool Football Club has decided to retire the number 20 from its squad as a posthumous tribute to Diogo Jota, the Portuguese striker who tragically died along with his brother Andre Silva in a car accident last week.
The measure was confirmed on Friday by the club after consulting with the player's widow, Rute, and his family. The number will be retired at all club levels, including the women's team and youth teams.
“He will be forever”
“Diogo joined us in 2020, helped us achieve our 20th league title, and did so by wearing the number 20 with honor, distinction, and affection,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of football for owner group Fenway Sports. “By retiring this number, we are making it forever. He will never be forgotten.”
Jota, who joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers, became a key figure for the Reds during his five seasons at Anfield. His talent on the pitch and warmth off it left an imprint on the club's community.
Liverpool play their first game since Jota's death on Sunday in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End. Several first-team players, who attended the funeral in Portugal, have already returned to training.
