Anthony Martial and his disappointing time in Liga MX
The French striker could not be decisive in the Clausura 2026. Martial's time in the Liga MX was not outstanding and in Monterrey they thanked him
French footballers have become a favorite choice for Mexican clubs. After André-Pierre Gignac's successful time with the UANL Tigres, several footballers from France have tried to try their luck in Mexican football. There are cases without much brilliance such as those of Florian Thauvin and Allan Saint-Maximin. The case of Anthony Martial is not far behind.
The former Manchester United forward arrived in Liga MX with a great sign behind him. The attacker born in Massy played for several clubs in Europe, including Monaco, Sevilla FC, AEK Athens and the aforementioned “Red Devils”. Rayados de Monterrey trusted that entire cartel and could not prove it. Anthony Martial will no longer continue with the team.
In his first season with the royal team, Anthony Martial played 12 games between the regular round and the Apertura 2025 Liguilla. The French attacker did not score a goal and did not grant assists either. Martial only accumulated just over 370 minutes on the field.
This panorama does not look so disturbing. The so-called “adaptation season” is not easy and it was expected that for Clausura 2026 the results would be better. In this second campaign Martial played a little more minutes.
The French attacker only played 8 games, including the Concachampions (about 400 minutes on the field). This season Martial only scored 1 goal and conceded 3 assists. Anthony Martial's only goal in Mexico was on the third round in Monterrey's 1-5 victory over Mazatlán.
It is evident that these results are not what was expected for the experienced 30-year-old forward. It is becoming increasingly clear that the French formula is not as effective. The inspiration is Gignac, but in the execution the performers have not achieved the same.
Anthony Martial had a current contract with Rayados de Monterrey. The French forward ended his relationship with the royals in June 2027. However, the board announced his departure. It is estimated that Martial earned $4 million dollars per season.
