Luis Enrique starred in a fight after the Club World Cup final
The Spanish coach hit striker Joao Pedro and could face sanctions from FIFA
Chelsea was crowned champion of the first Club World Cup with an expanded format after beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in a final marked by the forcefulness of the English team... and a controversial finish starring Luis Enrique.
The team led by Enzo Maresca, with Enzo Fernández as captain, defined the game in the first half with goals from Cole Palmer (double) and Joao Pedro.
From the start, the Blues imposed their rhythm on a PSG that never managed to settle on the pitch.
Incident after the final whistle
Despite Chelsea's high level of performance and the historical context of the final, the match was marked by an unfortunate incident. After the final whistle, and in the midst of a verbal exchange between players from both teams, Luis Enrique physically attacked Brazilian forward Joao Pedro.
The Spanish coach approached where Joao Pedro was arguing with Achraf Hakimi and Gianluigi Donnarumma, and there he hit him with his left arm, hitting the Chelsea striker first in the chest and then in the face. The player immediately fell to the turf, generating an immediate reaction from his teammates.
What followed were minutes of tension, with players from both squads intervening to separate and calm the situation. The brawl occurred as Chelsea players were beginning to celebrate their title victory.
This incident follows the expulsion of PSG player João Neves, who received a red card during the match for a violent tackle.
Now, a decision is awaited from FIFA. The must determine whether to sanction Luis Enrique for an act of organizational violence that occurred outside of regulation time, but which marked the conclusion of a tournament that promised to be historic.
