Throughout history, the Mexican national team has had great exponents in soccer worldwide, despite the fact that many times these are not valued as they should be, even by Mexican fans themselves.

Figures such as Hugo Sánchez, Rafael Márquez and Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández are some of the figures who have raised the name of Mexico abroad thanks to their great football careers in the Old Continent, however, there is a national footballer who, without having played in Europe, earned the recognition of the entire world.

This is Jorge Campos, the irreverent Mexican goalkeeper who, with his great quality between the posts, his striking shirts and the peculiarity that, in addition to being a goalkeeper, he could play as a center forward, amazed everyone in his participation in the World Cups in the United States 94 and France 98.

It was precisely in the World Cup in the United States, exactly 31 years ago, that Jorge Campos had one of his best performances, this when the Mexican team faced Ireland in a match that ended with a victory for El Tri by 2-1 and where Campos was fundamental so that his team did not receive a second goal.

To commemorate this performance, the The FIFA Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, has decided to pay tribute to the former goalkeeper by displaying one of the extravagant jerseys that Campos himself designed for his matches.

“His Mexico jersey, designed by himself and worn in a friendly that same year, is on display at Football Fever, our space where football and pop culture merge,” the museum recalled in a post on social media.

“The jersey will be on display until the end of August,” the information added.

“At just 1.70 meters tall, he broke the standards for goalkeepers thanks to his agility, his reading of the game and unparalleled versatility,” the museum added in a statement.

Campos, capped 130 times by Mexico, was famous in the 1990s and early 2000s for his acrobatic style, his frequent tendency to leave the area and for playing not only as a goalkeeper but also as a forward, making him one of the goalkeepers with the most goals in the history of the sport.
