A female referee in amateur soccer in Mexico City experienced deplorable and distressing moments when, during a match, the passion of a group of female fans of a team overflowed to the point that they brutally beat a female referee who was officiating her work.
A reprehensible incident occurred on a field in the Venustiano Carranza borough, located in the east-central part of Mexico City, where referee Jill Ortuno was brutally attacked by a group of women from the Real Modelo team's supporters' group. The team was defeated, and the referee was completely overpowered by the rowdy and aggressive women.
According to several posts on social media, the referee was officiating a match at the field known as the "Jopa" Carranza stadium when, at the end of the game, a group of angry women from the Real Modelo supporters' group attacked her.
In the images circulating online, the referee was punched, knocked down, and kicked on the ground, unable to defend herself. Her colleagues on the officiating crew were shocked and even appeared unable to react. to get the aggressors off her back for fear of being charged with gender-based violence. Given the seriousness of the events and the violence shown against the aforementioned referee, the authorities of the Attorney General's Office of Mexico City opened an investigation to clarify the facts and determine responsibility, especially to ensure that the aggressors are held accountable for their belligerent behavior. It was also reported through the social media account of Carlos Jimenez (C4), a journalist specializing in crime news in Mexico City, that the aggressive response from the Real Modelo supporters stemmed from their feeling of being affected by the referee's performance.
The images of the violence inflicted on these women sparked a wave of outrage from women's rights and anti-violence groups, as well as from the general public and amateur referees who demanded the intervention of authorities to improve security at these types of matches. It is currently unknown whether the aggressors have been identified or brought before the authorities to be punished.
The relevant authorities in Mexico City and the aforementioned borough will have to explain or justify these incidents. In amateur soccer, referees and other participants risk their lives at every match because the leagues lack the budget or refuse to pay for security to safeguard the well-being of players, coaches, referees, and fans in general. Most of the time, it's a veritable jungle.
