Former Paraguay national team goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert announced Wednesday that various opposition forces are supporting him as a candidate for mayor of the city of Luque, neighboring Asuncion, in the municipal elections scheduled for October 2026.

Chilavert, who was a candidate for President of his country in the 2023 elections, in which current ruler Santiago Pena, of the Colorado Party, won, said that he will seek to compete under the ticket “United for Luque.”

In that sense, he indicated that this alliance was formed with the support of various opposition forces for the “common good of helping people.”

“In Paraguay, there are many more of us honest people than criminals and corrupt people. I need, I spoke to them clearly, the participation of everyone, the support of everyone and fundamentally to put aside the differences we have, be it political or ideological,” the former captain of the Albirroja declared to Monumental radio.

The former goalkeeper trusted that what he achieved in the world of football he can also “achieve in politics.”

“Chila” also criticized the ruling faction Honor Colorado, the sector of the Colorado Party close to former President Horacio Cartes (2013-2018) and to which Pena belongs.

"I believe that there is a dictatorship today, fundamentally since Honor Colorado was formed. They normalized the corruption that exists in our country," accused the former national team player, without going into details.

In Paraguay, parties must hold internal elections to define their candidates for the electoral processes.
