The debate about a potential confrontation between the main figures of Mexican boxing added a new official position.

During a conversation with journalist Ariel Helwani, the Guadalajara boxer Canelo Álvarez once again rejected the possibility of a lawsuit against David Benavídez, arguing that the current physical dimensions of the “Mexican Monster” represent a factor of disproportion in the ring.

The controversy surrounding this clash has remained on the media agenda after Benavídez's transition to the light heavyweight and cruiserweight categories, where he has obtained international crowns.

However, in the words of Canelo Álvarez, the physical disparity prevents establishing a framework of competitive equity, because his own natural tonnage is within the limits of 168 pounds.

The factor of weight and dimensions on the quadrilateral

During the dialogue with the communicator Ariel Helwani, the boxer from Jalisco explained that the constant presence of names demanded by the press and fans is a regular part of the development of his career.

The athlete recalled that in previous stages he faced similar questions about opponents of the stature of Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Callum Smith or Gennady Golovkin.

"I have always been in that situation. Always. So it is nothing strange for me," declared the Mexican monarch in Ariel Helwani's space when analyzing the public's insistence on seeing this confrontation. “When I beat one, another immediately appeared,” he added to illustrate the industry's pattern of demands.

Regarding the physical status of the challenger of Mexican-American origin, the Guadalajara corner emphasized that the tonnage of his counterpart corresponds to much higher divisions. "Now it's Benavidez, but he's a heavyweight. He's a heavyweight fighting at 175 pounds or something like that, cruiser... He's a heavyweight, it's not fair," Canelo Álvarez detailed in response to the journalist's questions in the aforementioned interview.

The missed window of opportunity at 168 pounds

The justification for why the contest was not agreed in the past is based on the unification stage that the man from Guadalajara developed in the super middleweight division. According to Canelo Álvarez, the only real opportunity to make the commitment existed when he was seeking to collect the four main belts in the category, a period in which his opponent did not hold an absolute title.

"When I became undisputed champion, that was the right time to do that fight. If he had been champion at that time, that would have been the right fight. But it wasn't. At that time I was fighting at 168 pounds, but I wasn't a champion. I think that was the perfect time to do it," the fighter explained to Helwani's news space, also ruling out that at some point there were close contract signings by stating forcefully: "No, never."

With these details, Canelo Álvarez closes the chapter of negotiations with Benavídez's corner, concentrating his preparation on the training camp for his official return on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the scene where he will challenge the Frenchman Christian Mbilli for the super middleweight crown of the World Boxing Council.
