Josef Martínez would end his bitter time in Liga MX
The Venezuelan striker only scored one goal with the Xolos. Josef Martínez would like to return to the MLS
Josef Martínez is a respected forward in United States soccer. The Venezuelan attacker was, at times, one of the best offensive cards in Major League Soccer along with Carlos Vela. The Xolos de Tijuana forward had a discreet season in Mexico. Josef would have his bags ready.
The Venezuelan attacker decided to try his luck in Liga MX for Clausura 2026. Sebastián Abreu's Xolos de Tijuana gave him the opportunity to prove his worth at the age of 32. Josef Martínez arrived at the club for free and this would favor his quick departure.
According to information from Felipe Cárdenas, Josef Martínez would not continue with the Xolos de Tijuana. The Venezuelan striker had a one-year contract with the club, with the option of another season. But the report indicates that the link between the two would have come to an end.
"I have been informed that Josef Martínez and Club Tijuana have terminated his contract by mutual agreement. The Venezuelan international is open to returning to MLS," the report mentions.
The season was not good for Josef Martínez. The Venezuelan forward only saw action in 9 games of the Clausura 2026 tournament. The Venezuelan attacker played just over 230 minutes on the field in which he could only score 1 goal. This score was via penalty against Pachuca.
Josef Martínez would not have convinced Sebastián Abreu and the coaching staff of the Xolos de Tijuana. The former Torino striker only played two games from the starting eleven: 61 minutes against Club Atlas and 45 minutes against Santos Lagunas.
The MLS is its comfort zone
Josef Martínez would have intentions of returning to soccer in the United States. The Venezuelan attacker has worn the shirt of four clubs in the MLS. The first of them, and the most remembered of all, was with Atlanta United. Josef played 155 games in which he was able to score 106 goals. In his best season he scored 31 touchdowns (2018).
The Venezuelan forward also played 40 games for Inter Miami (15 goals); 26 games with Montréal (14 goals) and 31 games with San José Earthquakes (14 goals). With more than 145 goals Josef Martínez is one of the historic scorers in the MLS.
