The Argentine national team coach believes that Major League Soccer has managed to match the high level of Mexican soccer. Lionel Scaloni acknowledged that Liga MX has always had great potential, but they have now felt the advance of American soccer.
“Coincidentally, today we were talking in the car about how MLS has become very similar to the Mexican league. In fact, they play matches between them in the Leagues Cup competition and there are almost no differences. The Mexican league has always been a very competitive league, where there are very good current players who will play there. They are two powerful leagues. MLS is on the rise,” said Scaloni.
Two players who were part of the last Albiceleste squad play in Major League Soccer. Lionel Scaloni assured that they have no problem calling up a player who plays in a Concacaf tournament. Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul were called up for the last double date of the South American qualifiers.
“It's not that we care much where the players play, what matters most is their performance. Logically, if they're in strong leagues, even better, but right now, the MLS and the Mexican league are competitive leagues. It's not a problem for a national team player to play there; the level is there for them to be able to join the Argentine national team,” he explained.
Liga MX did not provide any players for Lionel Scaloni's last call-up. However, one of the players who has been in their sights is Angel Correa. The UANL Tigres forward has played 28 matches with the Albiceleste jersey.
The “Turco” sees Liga MX as superior
Antonio Mohamed was much more ambitious in his analysis. The coach of the Diablos Rojos del Toluca believes that Liga MX has surpassed Argentine soccer in terms of level. "El Turco" is a coach who has coached in Argentina and Brazil and has been part of several Mexican soccer processes. Mohamed is a qualified voice to offer his perspective on this topic.
"Argentina has 30 teams and the individual level has dropped. I think Mexico has better teams and better players (…) A better level right now? For me, Mexico, due to the quantity and quality of players. There are many quality players here. I think the individual level is better," Mohamed said on ESPN.
